Things To Do In Interlaken

When planning a trip to Switzerland, I recommend setting aside a few days to explore all the best that the Interlaken region has to offer!

This charming city makes a great home base for going on day trips to nearby attractions such as:

  • Grindelwald First And Bachalpsee Lake. Grindelwald First (also called First Cliff Walk) is one of the most popular attractions in Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland region. At Grindelwald First, you can do many different fun activities including going on a cliff walk built into the side of a rocky mountain, hiking to an alpine lake, hopping on a thrilling zip line, riding a mountain cart, and pedaling a Trottibike scooter down the mountain.
  • Oeschinen Lake. Oeschinensee is located 45 minutes southwest of Interlaken and is one of the most beautiful treks in Switzerland. Here you can hike to a turquoise alpine lake while enjoying views of tall mountain peaks, glaciers, waterfalls, and cozy mountain huts.
  • Aare Gorge. The Aare Gorge is located in Meiringen town within the Interlaken-Oberhasli district, about a 30-minute drive east of Interlaken city. The Aare Gorge consists of a 1400-foot-long glacier canyon with a blue river at the center of it. At this attraction, visitors can walk on paved & wooden pathways and through tunnels that have been carved into the mountain for easy access to the gorge.
  • Jungfraujoch Top of Europe. Jungfraujoch is the highest railway station that operates in Europe earning it the nickname ‘Top of Europe’. Visiting Jungfraujoch is a popular day trip from Interlaken due to its close location. Here you can enjoy views of glaciers, snow-capped peaks and roam through an ice palace situated at the top of the mountain.
  • Grindelwald. Grindelwald is a small mountain village just 30 minutes from Interlaken. This charming town is a great place to visit for the day to enjoy outdoor activities, browse through souvenir shops, and indulge in local foods.
  • Lauterbrunnen. Lauterbrunnen is another picture-perfect town in Switzerland. Lauterbrunnen is often referred to as the ‘Yosemite of the Swiss Alps‘ due to the abundance of waterfalls in this valley and the towering granite walls that surround it. Be sure to set aside a few hours for exploring Trümmelbachfälle where you can walk through tunnels carved inside a mountain and see multiple glacier waterfalls.

Looking for more thrilling adventures to do in the area? Be sure to check out the Swiss Alps Canyon Swing in Grindelwald where you can jump off from a 90-meter tall platform and experience a freefall into a glacier canyon below.

Interlaken is also one of the best places in Switzerland for paragliding. On this tandem paragliding experience, you’ll get to fly over the Swiss Alps and enjoy the stunning views of Lake Thun and Jungfrau summits from a bird’s point of view – an unforgettable experience of a lifetime!

Do You Need a Car In Interlaken, Switzerland?

If you plan to spend an extended time traveling around Switzerland and exploring different regions, I do recommend booking a rental car. While public transportation in Switzerland is reliable, you will be more limited in time and how much you can see and do.

Many of the top Switzerland attractions and mountain towns are spread out or situated in remote locations. Having a rental car is helpful for getting around and being on your own schedule!
